The TPS72518EVM-207 Evaluation Board provides system designers with a reduced parts count platform for the evaluation, testing and design-in of high performance synchronous buck switching regulator components. This board is intended for use as a general evaluation platform for the TPS72518 device, which is a single-phase synchronous buck converter using a low-profile, ion-implanted, MOSFET switch. The device incorporates several innovative features that help make system designs more efficient and more compact, while also reducing overall system design cost.

The TPS72518EVM-207 can be used to evaluate the operation of the TPS72518 device in a variety of applications including high-efficiency point-of-load (POL) applications, battery powered systems, fractional or multi-phase DC-DC converter designs, and other applications such as industrial, telecom, and medical. The board allows for quick and easy evaluation of the device’s features such as the adjustable switching frequency, adjustable current protection, adjustable soft-start, adjustable power good delay, adjustable active voltage positioning, and adjustable duty cycle on/off.

The evaluation board features extensive output voltage range of 0.6 - 5V with an accuracy of ±5%, and is capable of outputting a maximum continuous current of 4A. It also features a wide input voltage range of 4.0V to 18V. The board is also equipped with a National Semiconductor LM363 Temperature Sensor for temperature monitoring. In addition, the board also features an I2C interface for the configuration of the device.

The TPS72518EVM-207 works with a set of components that allow users to quickly and efficiently evaluate the performance of the device under a variety of conditions. The components include: a 24-pin DIP socket, a 2A surface-mount synchronous buck inductor, two through-hole bulk capacitors, two commercial grade ceramic capacitors, five surface-mount 0.1µF ceramic capacitors, one surface-mount 0.1µF ceramic capacitor, and a Schottky diode.

The TPS72518EVM-207 can be used in a variety of application fields and the working principle is the same as other synchronous buck converters. It adjusts the output voltage by employing pulse-width modulation (PWM) to control the switching rate of the MOSFET switch. The PWM signal is supplied by a controllable oscillator which is used to control the switching energy from the source. The output voltage is then filtered and regulated with an error amplifier and feedback resistor network. The feedback voltage is compared to a reference and the gain of the error amplifier adjusts the output voltage accordingly.
