TPS79650DRBTG4 Linear Regulators is a low power, CMOS, positive adjustablevoltage regulator with a fixed output voltage of 3.3 V. It is especiallysuitable for small size and portable applications. This regulator is commandedby an on-chip setting pin, for programming a 98% accurate variable outputvoltage from 0.8 V to 5.5 V.

The TPS79650DRBTG4 device includes a 3-A current limit and thermal overloadprotection. The internal reference voltage has a typical up-regulation toleranceof 2%, with a normal temperature range. The device is available in a greenthin package (DFN) and is lead-free (PB-free) compatible.

TPS79650DRBTG4 Working Principle:

The TPS79650DRBTG4 uses an internal low dropout voltage regulator to effectivelyregulate output voltage. The regulator consists of an error amplifier, a currentlimiting circuit, a PNP output transistor, and the typical components associatedwith a conventional linear regulator. The error amplifier compares the internalreference voltage and the FB voltage input from the output. The internalreference voltage is fixed and predetermined by TI, and the FB voltage isproportional to the output voltage.

The error amplifier compares the internal and external voltages, and produce athe appropriate level of control voltage, depending on the difference between thereference voltage and the feedback voltage. This control voltage is then used tocontrol the output current of the internal PNP output transistor via the currentlimiting circuit, achieving a regulated output voltage.

The voltage regulation is achieved by sensing the output voltage and controllingthe output transistor to maintain the voltage steady. The constant voltageregulation accuracy is achieved by using a temperature compensated bandgapsensor, which is used to compare the reference voltage and the outputvoltage.

The TPS79650DRBTG4 includes a soft-start feature to reduce inrush-currentduring start-up and to prevent over-current stress during operation. Soft-startimplies that the output voltage is ramped up linearly. The rise- and fall-timesof the ramping up can be programmed by the two external capacitors.

The TPS79650DRBTG4 also features a temperature thermal shutdown circuit thatminimizes the part temperature by automatically shutting down the internaloutput current in case of overtemperature event. The device can be unlocked byapplying a logic-low on the Release pin, allowing the internal circuitry torecover, and the output voltage to resume operation.
