Working Principle

The TPS7A3001DGNT Voltage Regulator applies a voltage reference to adjust the output voltage in the fixed-voltage mode. This voltage reference is generated by the reverse current mirror, in which the transistor Q1 and the resistor R1 establish the reference current for the input voltage. This reference current flows through the resistor divider R2, R3, and the transistor Q2 to generate the correct reference voltage. This reference voltage is then used to adjust the output voltage from the error amplifier whose gain is determined by the combination of resistor R4 and R5 and capacitor C1. The error amplifier compares the output voltage to the reference voltage and drives the control circuit accordingly.

The TPS7A3001DGNT Voltage Regulator also comes with some other features like thermal and short-circuit protection, over-voltage protection, and under-voltage lockout. The thermal protection is enabled by the N-Channel MOSFET driving the internal current source. This MOSFET is turned on by the thermal protection circuit which senses the die temperature and turns off the internal current source. The short-circuit protection works similarly. The over-voltage protection is enacted by the internal PNP transistor which is tuned to switch off once the output voltage rises above its designated maximum. The under-voltage lockout is enabled by the output voltage divider. When the output voltage divider senses a voltage below a certain level, the internal control circuit is blocked and the regulator goes into the under-voltage lockout state.
