The TSM922ESA+ (hereafter referred to as “the device”) is a Linear Comparator, a comparatively new entry in the field of electronic devices used in the linear-comparator application. In short, it is a fast-processing, high-precision, low-noise comparator, which has been specifically developed for use in applications such as industrial automation and general-purpose digital control applications.At its core, the device functions as a comparator. That is, it performs an operation known as a “comparison”—essentially, it compares two input signals, one for low-level logic, and one for high-level logic. The output of the comparison is then used to determine whether the two signals match, or if they differ in some way.The device can handle two different types of comparisons: Analog to Digital (A/D) and Digital to Digital (D/D). When using A/D comparisons, the device takes two analogue input signals and attempts to match them up against each other. This comparison is usually made using a set of predetermined thresholds. For instance, if one signal is between two thresholds and the other is outside, then the device will deem them to be different. With D/D comparisons, the two digital signals are compared instead. Regardless of the type of comparison being used, it is the device’s job to determine whether or not the two signals are equal to one another. If they are deemed to be equal, then the device will output a “true” value, otherwise it will output a “false” value. The device is also capable of performing a wide variety of operations on its input signals, such as switching between A/D and D/D comparisons, setting various operational parameters and more. This makes it ideal for use in a variety of applications, such as machine control, automation, digital signal processing (DSP) and much more.The device’s design has been optimised to provide the user with a particularly low-noise operation. This is achieved through the use of an advanced input stage, where a high-precision front-end is employed in order to reduce noise and improve the signal-to-noise ratio.
