The TSM923ESA+ is a dual-channel, zener-diode operated Comparator with a constant-current input circuitry. This device has a high voltage output, which is capable of driving large capacitive and inductive loads. When positive and negative inputs on the TSM923ESA+ are compared with each other, a differential output voltage is produced. This differential output voltage is used to measure and compare the amplitudes of signals.

This device mainly works on the principle of zener breakdown mechanism. This is a type of electrical break down which occurs when a reverse potential is applied to the junction between two n-type and p-type semiconductor regions. When a voltage is applied to the junction, the vertical electric field between the n-type and p-type regions increases. This eventually leads to an avalanche breakdown, in which free electrons are injected into the depleted region, thereby forming a conductive channel.

For linear comparison of two input signals, the TSM923ESA+ has two input nodes, each connected to its own pair of n and p-type regions. A voltage is applied to the junction and the input signal is applied to either of the two nodes depending on which type of signal needs to be measured. The voltage comparison is performed by comparing the amplitudes of the two input signals, with an output representing either a positive or negative difference.
