Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are an important type of capacitor, preferred for applications inside electronic equipment. The components feature a low ESR, high capacitance, and fast transient response. Although early versions had a cleverly designed paper and foil temperature compensation system, over the last several decades mass production of solid aluminum electrolytic capacitors has advanced to a point of fairly standardization, and allowed for a wide variety of applications.

A typical aluminum electrolytic capacitor is constructed with two aluminum foils, separated by a porous material impregnated with an electrolyte. The electrolyte allows a contained concentration of ions, and provides the electric current that connects the two aluminum foils. Electrical contact between the two foils is provided by the electrolyte itself, which forms a chemically stable solution with one complete electron transfer from the anode material to the cathode material.

One of the most common aluminum electrolytic capacitors is the TVA1603 series. Available in both through-hole and surface-mount packaging, these parts have a wide variety of application fields and working principles. The TVA1603 series is designed to provide an efficient, reliable and low cost solution for applications from CVD and motion control to signal conditioning.

The working principle of the TVA1603 series is based on aluminum foil electrolytic technology, where the two aluminum foils are first electroplated with a protective layer of zinc and then separated by an impregnated separator. An electrolyte, usually an alkaline solution or oil, is used to connect the two electrodes and provide an electrical connection. The semiconductor surface layer is then formed on each foil, which forms a semi-permeable barrier to allow ions to pass, and as a result, the capacitor stores energy.

The main application fields for the TVA1603 series of aluminum electrolytic capacitors are in aerospace and automotive applications where low ESR, fast response, and high temperature stability are necessary. For these applications, these elements have been designed with a wide capacitance range, high-level surge voltage capabilities, and a wide temperature range (−40 to +105 °C, +85 °C, +125 °C). The electro-acoustic characteristics of the parts are also considered in certain applications, allowing for good audio reproduction and control.

The TVA1603 series of aluminum electrolytic capacitors also provides excellent surge performance, making them ideal for high-energy pulse applications.
