Diodes are solid-state electronic devices which are used to regulate electric current and contain two terminals, namely anode and cathode, whose corresponding polarities indicate the direction of current flow. Diodes can also be used for rectifying AC to DC. They are an essential component for modern-day electronics and are used in most of the electronic circuits.

A Zener diode is type of diode which is exclusively used for the purpose of maintaining a steady DC voltage by regulating any fluctuations or variations in current or voltage. This type of diode has a breakdown voltage that can be designed or preset and this breakdown voltage, which is also the rated or peak inverse voltage (PIV) of a Zener diode, determines the maximum amount of reverse biased voltage that the diode can withstand during a period of sustained operating temperature. This voltage is generally printed on the surface of the device.

The TZMC4V7-M-08 Zener diode is a single Zener diode, which is widely used for applications of voltage regulation, rectifiers and overvoltage protection. It has a peak inverse voltage of 4V, a continuous forward current rating of 0.2A and a power dissipation rating of 400mW. Operating temperature ratings for this device are -65℃~+150℃.

The working principle of a Zener diode can be explained as follows. The diode is designed to have an electric field that is stronger on the side nearer to the P side such that a wavelength-dependent electrical breakdown can occur. When the reverse biased voltage on a Zener diode is higher than the peak inverse voltage (PIV) limit of the device, tunneling occurs across the depletion layer of the device and the diode lets current pass in the direction of the cathode to the anode. This allows the device to absorb abnormal voltages which may damage other electric components in the circuit. This ensures that the current flowing through the device does not increase beyond its maximum ratings, thereby protecting other electronic components from any voltage fluctuations or harmful energy.

In its most common application, the Zener diode is used to create a voltage regulator. In this type of application, a Zener diode is connected in parallel with a resistor and a power supply such that the resistor limits the current while the Zener keeps the output voltage in check. Under such a configuration, any changes in the input voltage will cause the diode to conduct, which in turn forces the voltage across the diode to remain constant and the resistor dissipates most of the extra current within the circuit. This helps to keep the output voltage constant even if the input voltage is varying.
