Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors - UBT2E220MHD Application Field and Working Principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, or aluminum electrolytic versions (AE) capacitors, are widely used in power electronic circuits due to their high capacitance levels, low leakage current, and good volumetric efficiency relative to the size of component. An example of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is the UBT2E220MHD which is a low profile, high temperature rated aluminum electrolytic capacitor with an ESR of 220mΩ at 125°C.

The main applications of aluminum electrolytic capacitors include power factor correction (PFC) circuits, snubber circuits, active filters, and harmonic filtering, among others. Additionally, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in automotive, industrial, and consumer electronics applications.

These capacitors are available in several different construction types, including SMD, through-hole, and wet construction, and feature a wide variety of voltage ratings (typically between 10 Vdc and 500 Vdc) and capacitance values (generally between 1uF and 10,000uF). UBT2E220MHD is a SMD structure type aluminum electrolytic capacitor with the voltage rating of 25 Vdc and the capacitance value of 2200 uF.

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors typically have two types of dissipation factor behavior, depending on the application at hand. Due to the combination of an anode made of aluminum foil and a cathode formed by etching-back the covered aluminum foil, current will flow through the oxide layer which acts as the dielectric layer of the double level of this type of capacitor. This double layer results in a higher capacitance volume than traditional capacitors.

The capacitance value of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is determined by its construction and the total area of the anode and cathode layers. Generally, the anode layer will contain fewer and larger areas, resulting in a higher capacitance value. The UBT2E220MHD is a double layer capacitor with an anode layer of aluminum foil and an oxide-etched cathode layer, allowing it to produce higher capacitance values in a tiny package.

Given the combination of small size, high capacitance value, and an effective ESR of 220mΩ at 125°C, the UBT2E220MHD aluminum electrolytic capacitor is well suited for a variety of applications. These capacitors can be used in PFC circuits, active filters/harmonic filtering, signal conditioning, motor start-up and discharge circuits, and other similar applications. Coupled with its low size and temperature ratings, the UBT2E220MHD aluminum electrolytic capacitor can meet the diverse needs of current electronic applications.
