UC2524N Application Field and Working Principle
UC2524N is a fixed frequency PWM controllers primarily designed to regulate the output voltage of a switching power supply. It belongs to a family of DC DC switching controllers, which are within the field of PMIC – Voltage Regulators.
Introduction of UC2524N
UC2524N is an improved version of UC2524 series which offers improved specifications. In general, UC2524N offers improved protection behaviour [1] with the same pin configuration, functionality and excellent energy efficiency. All these features make UC2524N a great tool for a wide range of applications with improved switching frequency jitter (text) and better transient response. [2]
Components and Operation of UC2524N
UC2524N has a total of 16 pins. It includes two error amplifiers, driver stage, two oscillators, two comparators, high-side P-channel MOSFET (Q2) and low-side N-channel MOSFET (Q1). The underlying architecture of UC2524N consists of two separate functional blocks, namely the high side driver and the low side driver. Both of these blocks share a common ground (GND). The high side block contains error amplifier, current sensing circuitry, PWM oscillator, driver transistor and comparator. Similarly, the low side driver contains error amplifier, PWM oscillator, driver transistor and comparator.
The operation of UC2524N can be divided in two main stages: feedback and PWM control loops. The feedback loop consists of the error amplifier, whereby the output voltage and frequency are regulated. The reference voltage is set by an external resistor divider circuit, while the output voltage is sensed by an internal voltage divider connected to COMP pin and the feedback loop adjusts the oscillator frequency accordingly. The PWM control loop consists of the two oscillators, two comparators and two MOSFETs. When the input voltage is present and switch turn-on is required, the high-side and low-side drive signals are generated. At the same time, the low-side signal is latched so that the MOSFETs are not switched off until a specific signal is received from the low-side driver. [3]
Beneficial Characteristics of UC2524N
UC2524N offers a wide range of beneficial characteristics. Firstly, this regulator can provide very precise output voltage regulation due to its high closed-loop bandwidth. Secondly, it has an internal current-limit circuit that helps prevent output overload by limiting the peak load current. Thirdly, it has built-in dynamic frequency control, which helps the regulator to maintain constant output frequency even when the input voltage or load current is changed. Fourthly, the internal hysteresis protection circuit provides excellent transient line and load regulation. Finally, the frequency jitter helps reduce the EMI level, making this regulator ideal for high energy efficiency in high frequency applications. [4]
