UC2526AN is a monolithic integrated circuit of Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) specialized for off-line and DC to DC converters. This device is intended as a primary PWM power supply controller suitable for high power applications. It has a built in 14.3V reference so output voltage is determined by an external resistive divider. The UC2526AN is specially designed to reduce component count and simplify the design development process by seamlessly integrating the driving circuit, the most common feedback network, and the pulse width modulating signal into the same IC.
The UC2526AN can be used in a variety of different off-line applications, ranging from AC adapter systems, desktop computer power supply systems, AT X power supplies, as well as motorized applications. The UC2526AN can also be used in DC to DC converters where the output is regulated with external feedback, usually from a power transistor or other power circuit or a split supply. Then UC2526AN implements the necessary logic to precisely control the on-off of the power switching devices.
The device also has an active switching feature which eliminates high voltage levels in the startup. This helps to ensure robustness and safe operation of the power supply. The temperature protection feature helps to protect the device from thermal destruction and over current destruction, while the under-voltage protection minimizes the consumption when the output voltage is lower than the need. The device also has an option to terminate the output current when the power supply fails, which is ideal for emergency applications.
The working principle of the UC2526AN is based on Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) which uses a triangle wave oscillator as the reference for the switching of the power switch devices. This wave is compared with the actual output voltage from the output filters feedback and the result is a pulse of adjustable width. This pulse is then used to switch the power switch devices according to the desired output voltage.
The UC2526AN works in an open-loop control mode, relying on the external control feedback, and a power sense resistor to maintain the output voltage across a wide operating temperature range. The two features, isolated output and exceptional regulation performance, make the UC2526AN suitable for off-line and DC to DC converter applications including switching power supplies, regulated power sources, switch-mode regulators and voltage converters.
