PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers are devices which integrate circuit protection features, such as hot-swap, over-voltage and over current performance, with a power path management design which allows for the safe connection of loads. In hot-swap applications, the UC2914N Hot Swap Controller uses two mechanical pins which allow power to be applied without damage to either the load or the power supply. The controller allows for continuous conduction mode, meaning that the output current is in line with the current entering the device until it has reached its peak current limit.

The UC2914N Hot Swap Controller consists of two key components, the driver and the control circuits. The driver component consists of two SCR  — one rated for the upper and one for the lower current limit of the device. Both SCRs are connected to the supply voltage and to the output voltage, and are regulated by the control circuit.

The control circuit provides the over-current management and the over-voltage protection. When the current exceeds a preset level, the controller turns off the SCR, limiting the output current. A base current is maintained through the SCR during the off state, thereby allowing for quick power up of the load. The control circuit also monitors the load voltage to provide over-voltage protection by turning off the SCR if the voltage exceeds a preset level.

The UC2914N works in conjunction with a shunt resistance to provide current limit protection. The device has two separate current limit settings, one for the lower limit and one for the upper limit. The lower limit is the minimum current the device will allow and the upper limit is the maximum current the device allows. The current limit can be adjusted through software or a trimming resistor. In addition, the UC2914N also has an under-voltage lockout feature that prevents the device from turning on if the voltage is below a pre-determined threshold.

The UC2914N works with a wide range of input and output voltages, ranging from 6 to 28V on the input, and from 2 to 28V on the output. It also operates in temperature extremes from -40C to +130C. In addition, the device features a low time-delay design, allowing for rapid power up of loads.
