Wide area applications of digital power-switched power supplies require superior power management integrated circuits (PMICs) that are capable of controlling high-current levels, detecting undervoltages and overvoltages, and delivering precisely regulated current. The Texas Instruments UC2906DWG4 integrated circuit is an ideal choice for such applications, due to its ability to provide regulated output voltages from as low as 1.9V up to 6V and current up to 6A with rapid response time. This PMIC’s main application fields are battery chargers for Lithium-ion and other types of secondary cells.
Typically, Li-ion cells require instrumentation to ensure their safe and reliable charging, be it during the manufacture of cells or in actual applications. These Li-ion charger ICs include a charge loop to maintain a predetermined constant current in the output as well as a safety timer to prevent overcharging of the battery. The UC2906DWG4 charger IC incorporates these two key features along with various other protections to deliver maximum charging performance. These features together make the IC ideal for a wide range of battery charger applications such as portable power supplies, data loggers and automotive load stabilizers.
This PMIC comes in an 8-pin VSSOP package, with an operating voltage up to 30V and an operating junction temperature of -40 to +125oC. The device can be used in battery-powered systems with a wide voltage supply range from 3.5V – 30V as well as in AC-switched/DC power systems. The UC2906DWG4 incorporates an over-voltage protection circuit that quickly and effectively prevents output voltage from exceeding the safe limits. Additionally, the IC also offers an adjustable charge termination voltage, adjustable current-limit point, adjustable safe timer and clock source as well as an adjustable battery pre-charging function.
The working principle of the UC2906DWG4 PMIC device can be broken down into two stages: pre-charging and the actual charging. Pre-charging is necessary when the Li-ion and Li-polymer cells are in stand-by or undercharged conditions. Pre-charging serves to charge the cell to a safe level for the start of the main charging process. This process is normally completed when the cell voltage reaches about 80 -- 85% of the charge termination voltage. Once the cell voltage is at this level, the UC2906DWG4 will automatically enter the main charging cycle by switching from the low charge current to the full charge current.
The main charging process is governed by the charging loop that maintains a constant output voltage which is usually the charge termination voltage. However this can me modified to any other level. The UC2906DWG4 also features advanced charging protection mechanisms that monitor the output voltage, current, temperature and clock signals to ensure safe and reliable operation. These protection measures are effective in protecting against short circuits, power surges and overloads.
Once the charging process has completed, the UC2906DWG4 will automatically terminate the charging cycle and enter the charge completion stage. During this stage, the charger will page the load source with a low frequency signal to notify the system that the charging process is now completed. This is followed by the discharge mode which is used to provide cell balancing.
The UC2906DWG4 provides a complete and reliable charging solution for battery-powered systems, with its adjustable current and voltage settings, adjustable timeout setting and the advanced protective features. The IC is ideal for battery charger applications such as portable power supplies, data loggers and automotive load stabilizers, due to its adequate support for multiple types of Li-ion cells and its wide operating voltage range.
