UC3823ADWG4 is a Switching-Mode Control IC of Power Management and Integrated Circuit (PMIC) that belongs to the specific Voltage Regulators and Switching Controllers subcategory. This integrated general purpose variable frequency controller is ideal for controlling inductive loads with relatively constant power requirements.UC3823ADWG4 was developed by Texas Instruments and it is intended to provide a variety of applications, primarily for industrial and commercial use. It is also used in dc-to-dc converters with buck, boost, or similar operating configurations. Generally, a DC-to-DC converter, also known as a switch-mode power supply or a switched-mode power supply, is responsible for transforming electrical power from one voltage level to another. In order to achieve the desired output voltage, UC3823ADWG4 can step-down, step-up, or invert a DC source.
The UC3823ADWG4 is basically formed by two 3-Terminal Blocks integrated together on a single piece of Silicon. The first block includes an adjustable oscillator, an error amplifier and a line compensation network. The second block includes a current sensing/regulation circuit, an overvoltage protection circuit and an external driver transistor. Depending on the application that is intended to develop, the design of this controller allows its frequency to be configured anywhere between 100 kHz and 500 kHz. Likewise, the sense resistor can also be configured in order to determine the output current capability.
Nevertheless, due to its self-protection feature, the IC will automatically shut down once it detects a “short circuit condition” in the output of the converter. Additionally, the “Automatic Maximum Duty Cycle Control” command will decrease the switching frequency when channel duty cycles are greater than 95%, which ultimately enhances the reliability of the entire device. The Error Amplifier can be used to limit the output voltage accurately and it provides internal compensation. The maximum voltage that can be generated by UC3823ADWG4 is up to 40V.
UC3823ADWG4 also requires some external components to make the control practical. The circuit should be designed according to the following external circuitry requirements:
- A primary or bootstrap winding to the controller common.
- A power supply drain (VCC), connected to the pin #1 of the device.
- Two outputs stages, one connected to the pin #9, another to pin #14 (also known as the cycle-by-cycle clamp).
- A low drop delay circuit, connected between pin #2 and the upper output stage.
- A voltage divider between VCC and the primary winding.
In conclusion, UC3823ADWG4 is a highly efficient, cost-effective solution for controlling inductive loads and driving DC-to-DC converters with buck, boost, or similar configurations. It is also perfectly suitable for controlling AC phase, DC motors and PWM dimming.
