UC3845BVNG is a cost effective, high performance voltage regulator and switch mode DC to DC controller device. It is suitable for use in applications such as fan controllers, motor control applications, digital-to-analog converter control and other analogous applications. It features two independent current-mode pulse width modulation (PWM) control synthesizers, an open drain pulse output and several bytes of registers and integrated circuits to provide an enhanced and efficient power management solution.
The working principle of the UC3845BVNG voltage regulator and switching controller is simple. When two or more power supply sources are connected together at different voltages, a large quad-op-amp can voltage sense, or regulate, those voltages to a specific level. By controlling the voltage drops across each power supply source and then the current required to sustain each power source, the current level of each power source is regulated to the preset desired level.
In addition to its core function of regulating voltages, the UC3845BVNG performs a few additional operations as well. These operations are meant to increase system stability and reduce the number of external components needed for effective power management. For example, with its synchronous rectifier (SR) control, the device reduces switching losses and increases efficiency. The internal oscillator can be adjusted to allow for a wide range of switching frequencies and enables power factors of up to 0.99. Finally, the synchronous rectifier control can also be used to reduce the dissipation of external components, such as transformers and rectifiers.
The UC3845BVNG also features a number of protection features to reduce mis-application damage and improve safety. It features an undervoltage lockout (UVLO) feature which prevents the application from operating if the input voltage drops below the trip point. Additionally, it also has a cycle-by-cycle current limit which prevents damage to the application by controlling the maximum output current. Finally, the device does have an overvoltage protection (OVP) feature which shuts down the application if the output voltage exceeds a certain value.
