UC3903DWTR Application Field and Working Principle

The UC3903DWTR is a member of STMicroelectronics Supervisors family of chips that falls into their Programmable Multi-Output and Monitoring Integrated Circuit (PMIC – Supervisors) portfolio. This is a low-cost, precision Voltage Supervisors. It is specifically designed to monitor and control multiple DC or low-frequency AC outputs using a range of voltage inputs. Working Principle

The UC3903DWTR is a precision Voltage Supervisor chip that performs multiple functions such as monitoring, zero power reset of multiple output pins and generation of adjustable voltage outputs. It designed to operate with regulators having 3.3V to 28V output. When the power supply falls below or rises above the programmable threshold values, the chip will in turn generate a logic open-drain resetting signal. It also supports selectable manual reset and monitoring of a wide variety of signals.

The chip comes with two independent onboard voltage monitors, Active-High (AH) and Active-Low (AL). The Active-High monitor is set by connecting a Voltage Divider from VCC to VTRIP. The active-Low monitor is set by connecting a voltage divider from GND to VTRIP. Then, upon power supply application or removal, the voltage at VTRIP will be monitored constantly. When the voltage drops below VTRIP, the monitor output, MONit, will become active and will cause a reset pulse (RST). The Dual-channel voltage monitor supplies a single voltage monitoring signal output (MONit) and can be used to detect both high and low voltages.

The UC3903DWTR also features an adjustable voltage reference (VRef) between 2.8V and 5.5V that is generated by a precision resistor divider network. This reference is used to control the output of the Digital-to-Analog converter (DAC) which can be used to control a variety of output signals such as thresholds, voltage drops and power supply sequencing. Finally, the chip also has an adjustable Supervisory Output (SO) pin which is driven active-Low when a regulated voltage (VCC) drops below a designated threshold. This pin can be used to control an external MOSFET, N-channel MOSFET, or relay, among other applications.
