Features of the chip such as overtemperature protection, short circuit protection, charge current and voltage regulation and voltage monitor ensure safe and reliable operation.Hardware Overview
The IC consists of a power supply block, a 3-phase charger and a real-time monitor sub-system. The power supply consists of an integrated switching power supply controller, power MOSFETs, an error amplifier and an overvoltage/undervoltage protection circuit. The 3-phase charger consists of an over-voltage/undervoltage protection circuit, an input voltage and current monitor, a charge current and voltage monitor, a temperature monitor and a charge FET. The real-time monitor sub-system includes an integrated temperature monitor, over-temperature and overcharge protection, safety timer and a charge status monitor.Working Principle
The UC3909DW adopts an adaptive, capacitive capacitor-divider and an integrated DC-DC power supply control system to produce a precise and reliable charging current. The charger divides the charging current into five phases: precondition, constant voltage- current, trickle charge, charge termination, and float. At the beginning of the pre-condition phase, the charger charges the battery with a small current to “wake-up” the battery. When the voltage of the battery is higher than the preset “wake-up” voltage, the charger moves to the constant-voltage stage. During this stage, the charger maintains the battery voltage at a certain fixed voltage determined by the terminal connected voltage and the battery capacity. When the charge current reaches a certain level determined by the surface area of the battery, the charger moves to the trickle mode. In this mode, the charger applies a small current to prevent the battery voltage from dropping. When the battery voltage reaches a predetermined level, the timer indicates the termination of the charge, and the charger moves to the float mode. In the float mode, the charger maintains the battery voltage at a stable level without applying any current to the battery. This prevents the battery from overcharging and excessive battery life.Conclusion
