Evaluation and Demonstration Boards and KitsThe great advantage of modern Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) is that the immense complexity of a system can be overcome by application-specific hardware. They are increasingly used in many consumer electronics, automotive, and medical devices. The UCC28019AEVM is an evaluation and demonstration board designed to help users to evaluate and analyze the applications of the UCC280xx family of current mode PFC controller. This allows users to quickly learn about proper use, operation, and benefits of this specialized circuit.The UCC28019AEVM consists of various components and is a flexible platform for power factor correction (PFC) with pre-routed bus bars for all necessary connections. The UCC280xx family is composed of 5 control ICs, UCC28080, UCC28081, UCC28083, UCC28084, UCC28090, UCC28091. All of these are current-mode PFC controllers that can opera tewith an input voltage range of up to 600V and a frequency range of up to 10kHz. The PFC power stages and their associated circuits are applicationspecific and can vary from application to application, but the UCC280xx family of controllers can be used to provide a very accurate Power Factor Correction (PFC) throughout the entire voltage range.The UCC28019AEVM evaluation board includes several features that simplify and enhance Power Factor Correction performance. It utilizes a combination of hardware and software features to help reduce time to market and development costs. The main components include an on-board opamp with a gain setting of ~10V/V which has been pre-calibrated and set up, a high accuracy, internal voltage reference set to 2.5V, and an adjustable 5V/4.5V/3.3V/2.5V local drops for external compensation. Also included on the board is a microcontroller for auxiliary functions such as Digital Power Factor Lamp (DPFL) and load diagnosis. The UCC28080 series of controllers also incorporates digital compensation, enabling additional control fine-tuning within a software environment.The UCC280xx family also offers a wide variety of features that are relevant to PFC operations, some of which are not available on other controllers. With the UCC280xx family, power stages can be optimized for efficient operation using variable reference levels, duty-cycle optimized PFC methods, and phase-shifted topologies. In addition to the hardware interface on the UCC280xx family, the onboard microcontroller can be used to provide advanced features such as OVP, UVP, OTP, and OCD protection as stated in the datasheet.The UCC28019AEVM eval board also consists of an advanced switching power supply for the control IC. This power supply consists of a 5V DC converter with 3-phase rectification and a buck converter made of bulk capacitor and a diode. This setup helps ensure accuracy of the control IC. In addition to the on-board power supply, the board includes separate +5V and -12V power input pins for test points and optional front-panels.In operation, the UCC28019AEVM board automatically detects the input voltage and the external signal of the PFC stage. It then sets the parameters based on the incoming signal and the chosen PFC topology. The onboard microcontroller will then monitor the power stage for any irregular behavior and the pre-installed measures can be adjusted as necessary. The UCC280xx family also provides advanced features for controlling PFC by providing error loop compensation and REF level stabilization.
