UCC27201AD Application Field and Working Principle

UCC27201AD gate drivers are members of the class of power management integrated circuits (PMIC) designed to control the behavior of external switch devices connected to them. These switch devices, typically FETs or MOSFETs, can each draw high levels of current and dissipate very large levels of heat. PMICs such as the UCC27201AD gate driver enable the external switch devices to be controlled with precision, thereby ensuring that the current and power capabilities of the devices are not exceeded and their thermal dissipation is kept within acceptable limits.The UCC27201AD gate driver is specifically designed to control the behavior of two external switch devices. A total of 6 outputs are available, two for each of the external switch devices plus two open-drain outputs for voltage feedback and fault reporting.The UCC27201AD is an advanced gate driver, and it incorporates some features not found on traditional gate driver chips. The most important of these is the use of an "active-clamper" system to clamp the voltage across each external switch device to the desired level while preventing any subsequent ringing on the drain and source pins of the device. This active-clamper technology is key to the ability of the UCC27201AD to control the behavior of the external switch devices with extreme precision and accuracy.The working principle of the UCC27201AD is relatively straightforward. The two inputs and three outputs of the chip relate to the three terminals of the external switch device (source, gate and drain). An external voltage source is connected to the drain pin and an internal voltage reference is connected to the source pin. The gate output from the UCC27201AD then controls the switching action of the external switch device.The UCC27201AD is able to monitor the voltage supply from the external voltage source and keep the voltage across the external switch within a predetermined level by actively clamping it. When the supply voltage exceeds the predetermined level, the UCC27201AD clamps the voltage, preventing the switching action of the external switch device. When the supply voltage is below the predetermined level, the UCC27201AD removes the clamping, allowing the external switch device to turn on and draw current.The UCC27201AD also contains open-drain outputs for voltage feedback and fault reporting. These open-drain outputs allow the UCC27201AD to monitor the voltage across the external switch device and alert the user if it exceeds preset levels. In this way, the UCC27201AD gate driver provides an effective means of controlling the behavior of the external switch devices while helping to protect them from overvoltage or short-circuit conditions.In summary, the UCC27201AD is a versatile and efficient PMIC gate driver that offers excellent control of the behavior of two external switch devices.
