Power management integrated circuits (PMIC) are designed to optimally supply a device with power while ensuring the device operates efficiently. These circuits are used across devices ranging from automotive to consumer electronics. Each PMIC contains a set of components, including rectification controllers, voltage and current regulators, voltage and current monitors, and in many cases, a buck-converter. UCC28730QDRQ1 is an AC/DC converter PMIC that serves as offline switcher for automotive applications and consumer electronics.

The output rectifying bridge is used to re-direct the stepped-up DC voltage to the power conditioning stage. Once the DC voltage is inputted into the power conditioning stage, the regulated output is produced.
To ensure an efficient and economic regulation of the input and output voltages, the power conditioning stage of UCC28730QDRQ1 incorporates several components with its primary component being the buck converter. The buck converter consists of a voltage switch, inductor, and a capacitor that control the output voltage levels. The buck converter works by using the voltage switch to control the amount of time the circuit is in one of two states, on or off. During the “on” state, the inductor stores energy while the capacitor holds voltage when the circuit switches to the “off” state. The period of time the circuit is “on” or “off” is directly related to the output voltage with “on” providing greater output and “off” providing lower output.
