The UC3889D is a high performance Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controller designed to provide superior performance in a wide range of Off-Line Converter topologies. It features an adjustable frequency oscillator, adaptive-ON-time & hold-time slope compensation circuit, a zener diode clamp for input overvoltage protection, and is designed to work with a wide variety of low cost, low power MOSFETs. The UC3889D provides an excellent power efficiency, high power density, and accurate voltage regulation.The UC3889D is used in many applications, including those found in computers and consumer electronics. It can be used in AC-DC converters, battery chargers, off-line switching power supplies, power factor correction, DC-DC converters, and light dimming control.The UC3889D applies pulse width modulation in order to achieve the desired power output and voltage regulation. Pulse width modulation is a method of driving an alternating current or voltage into an MOSFET or other device via a series of digital pulses. The length of each pulse is determined by the input voltage, typically described as its Amplitude orValue. In order for an MOSFET to be driven into conduction, the pulse width of the signal must exceed the initial conduction threshold of the device.For an AC-DC power supply, such as an off-line switching power supply, the UC3889D drives the MOSFET switch with an oscillator waveform of adjustable frequency. The forward and reverse conduction times of the oscillator waveform can be adjusted for maximum efficiency in varying load conditions. This allows for power savings and improved power factor.In addition to working with AC-DC converters, the UC3889D is also useful in DC-DC converters. It features a low voltage start-up circuit and operating frequency synchronization, which makes it ideal for buck, boost, and buck-boost converter designs. The UC3889D further features an inner current limit circuit, which eliminates the need for an additional current sense resistor, saving cost and increasing efficiency.Finally, the UC3889D also features a light dimming control circuit, making it suitable for use in LED lighting and other applications where light dimming is desired. The light dimming control circuit includes a built-in low ripple noise oscillator, providing high frequency switching and enabling dimming with minimum flicker.The UC3889D is an ideal choice for designers looking to implement a cost effective, highly efficient solution for a wide variety of off-line switching applications. Its intuitive design, adjustable parameters, and robust protection features combine to make it a very attractive solution.
