UCC38C41D Application Field and Working Principle
The UCC38C41D is a high performance pulse width modulation (PWM) current-mode controller engineered to drive a power MOSFET or IGBT in constant frequency current-mode switching power supply applications. It offers the low power efficiency, low cost and optimal transient characteristics that eliminate the need for external loop compensation, providing an ideal replacement for multiple dedicated analog components. The voltage-mode control algorithm is used to regulate the output voltage and maintain the accuracy of the output voltage. The CFCM operations of the UCC38C41D takes into account the voltage at the control node that corresponds to the top MOSFET and the lower MOSFET.
The pulse-width modulation (PWM) control scheme used by the UCC38C41D is a pure current-mode control scheme. This scheme operates using the premise that an output current is constant and directly proportional to the difference between the inputs. In current-mode control, a small current is injected into the error amplifier to control the voltage ratio. The reference voltage determines the average current delivered from the error amplifier, and this is then used to control the top and the lower MOSFETs.
The UCC38C41D applies pulse-width modulation to ensure best operation for the load. To maintain the output voltage, the controller builds in a gain of 1/X, where X is the fixed frequency in kHz. The gain is used to adjust the amount of voltage feedback and the PWM duty cycle. As the output voltage changes, the voltage difference between the lower MOSFET and the top MOSFET will change, and the duty cycle will be adjusted accordingly. The UCC38C41D can also be set to a fixed-frequency setting, which is common for applications below 200kHz. If higher frequencies are needed, the user can set the UCC38C41D for switched frequency operation.
