The UCC3960P is a high-efficiency, low-cost power integrated circuit designed for offline AC/DC converters and offline switchers. This integrated circuit is ideal for achieving high AC-to-DC conversion efficiency and low THD with excellent EMI performance. It is able to both the rectify the AC line voltage and convert the rectified voltage into DC power for a wide range of applications and features OVP, UVP and adaptive-voltage slew rate limiting.
The basic principle of the UCC3960P is the dual-conversion technique of using two power switch stages. The two stages consist of a first rectifying stage, which rectifies the AC input voltage, and a second DC-DC conversion stage, which converts the rectified voltage into the desired DC voltage. The first switching stage uses MOSFETs to provide high AC-to-DC transformation efficiency. It is followed by an active PWM DC-DC converter featuring an IC with good response and low standby power.
The UCC3960P integrates several advanced features that make it suitable for a wide range of applications. It has an adaptive voltage slew rate limiting feature which monitors the power supply outputs and provides gradual changes in output voltage , preventing large overshoot that may occur during start-up. It also has a precision overload protection (OVP) feature which monitors the load current and shuts down the power supply before the overload level results in damage to the power components or load. Finally, it has an under-voltage protection (UVP) feature which shuts down the system when the output voltage is below a certain threshold.
In addition to the features mentioned above, the UCC3960P also includes advanced features such as peak current limit and compensation temperature sensing. It also has several protection features such as short-circuit protection, over-temperature protection, over-voltage protection, and under-voltage protection. It has a high AC to DC transformation efficiency of up to 90% and excellent EMI performance. It has a low input current ripple and the diameter of the power supply coils can be up to 12mm.
