A disk of thick aluminum foil extends into the can and is connected to a smooth, cylindrical metal electrode on the inner side. The capacitor is filled with a liquid electrolyte that serves as the dielectric. The electrolyte also serves to conduct current between the outer case and the inner electrode. A thin sheet of aluminum oxide, the dielectric, is formed on the aluminum foil as it is anodized within the liquid electrolyte. This dielectric film is what gives the capacitor the ability to store and release energy.The package contains two pins for connecting the capacitor to a circuit and a safety valve. The safety valve is designed to remove pressure build-up in the aluminum can in case of electrolyte evaporation. This is an important safety feature and should not be bypassed. The pins on the capacitor should be properly connected to the circuit and, if necessary, insulated with a sleeve to protect against arcing.The UCY2V820MHD9 aluminum electrolytic capacitor works by storing and releasing electrical energy.
