Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Working Principle

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor works on the principle of capacitance, and consists of two metal electrodes separated by an electrolyte. When an electric current is passed through the capacitor, electrons are attracted to and collected on the positive electrode due to its higher positive voltage, and eventually form a “polarized layer” on its surface. This polarized layer acts as a barrier between the two electrodes and prevents further electrons from passing.

The polarized layer must be constantly refreshed to maintain this barrier, otherwise it will gradually “bleed” off and lead to a significant decrease in capacitance. This is why aluminum electrolytic capacitors are usually found in coupling and filtering circuits such as power supplies, where the constant voltage surge will continually refresh the polarized layer and keep the capacitance at its specified level.
