As an integral part of modern electronics, a diode is a two-terminal semiconductor device in which one terminal is an anode and the other terminal is a cathode. The diode conducts current in one direction only and can act as a rectifier, allowing current to flow in one direction and not in the opposite direction. The UFS360J/TR13 is an advanced single-phase rectifier diode, featuring high current rectification up to 360A and an ultra-fast recovery time. It is used for applications such as enhanced synchronous rectification (SR) designs, input rectification, motor control and flyback converters.
The UFS360J/TR13 device consists of a high-voltage rectifier with improved non-punch-through (NPTH) technology in an isolated package housing two diodes. The anode of one device is connected to the cathode of the other, giving the unit two separate "legs" with a breakdown voltage of 800V plus. This provides improved surge capability and temperature stability compared with other rectifiers. The working principle of the UFS360J/TR13 is based on the rectification of alternating current (AC) input. With the anode and cathode terminals connected to the external power source, electricity flows when the anode is made positive in relation to the cathode. Flow of current continues in the same direction until the anode process is reversed, effectively blocking current flow. This on-off cycle occurs with each wave of the AC input, providing rectification of the AC waves into a rectified DC waveform. This rectified waveform can be used to power or control various electronic devices.
In certain applications, the UFS360J/TR13 can be used to eliminate the need for extra external components. For example, in a synchronous rectification controller, two separate diodes can be connected to the rectifier, one receiving positive voltage from the controller and the other receiving negative. By replacing these two diodes with a UFS360J/TR13, both anode and cathode are connected in the same package, eliminating the need for the external components.
The ultra-fast recovery time of the UFS360J/TR13 also makes it ideal for use in flyback converters. In this type of circuit, the device is used to store energy in the form of current, which is then released when the primary source is removed. This process is known as energy recovery, and the UFS360J/TR13\'s short recovery time makes it efficient in energy recovery applications.
