Working Principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors use an anode made of aluminum foil and an electrolyte, usually an aqueous solution of ethylene glycol and boric acid, to form a semiconductor layer between them. The ions in the electrolyte are attracted to the positively-charged aluminum anode, forming a sort of junction between them. As the capacitor charges, the positively-charged ions in the electrolyte form a positively-charged layer on the anode which attracts negatively-charged ions in the electrolyte to form a negatively-charged layer on the cathode of the capacitor.
