Working principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are unique because they use an anode of pure aluminum foil, and an electrolyte of organic acid or electrolyte-soaked paper as their electrodes. The oxide layer on the aluminum anode acts as the dielectric, and the electrolyte serves to conduct the electric current.

Electricity flows from the anode to the cathode when connected to a power source. This electric current creates an oxonium layer on the anode that acts as the dielectric field. This creates a barrier between the two electrodes, allowing them to store an electric charge.

The layers of aluminum oxide on the electrode, dielectric, and electrolyte all work together to form a capacitor, which is able to store and release energy like a battery.
