Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, also known as aluminum electrolytic capacitors, are capacitors in which an electrolyte (generally an aqueous solution of ammonium bicarbonate or ammonium nitrate) impregnates a porous segment of aluminum foil, producing a highly conductive double layer of aluminum oxide on the surface of the foil. This thin layer of aluminum oxide often acts as the dielectric in the capacitor. The device itself is made up of two aluminum electrodes separated by a thin layer of electrolyte.
