An aluminum electrolytic capacitor is a type of electrolytic capacitor, which uses an aluminum foil with an etched surface as the anode, covered with a dielectric and electrolyte, and then covered with a second aluminum foil as the cathode. The main characteristic of this type of capacitor is that it has very high capacitance for a given volume, but also limited maximum voltage and maximum operating temperature.

The aluminum electrolytic capacitor comes in various sizes and shapes but typically have a cylindrical shape. Depending on the application, a cylindrical aluminum electrolytic capacitor can have plate capacitance values that can range from a few hundred picofarads to fractions of a farad, with holding or leakage currents up to several amps.

The ULD1V330MDD developed by the Japanese company Nichicon is one of the most popular aluminum electrolytic capacitors. This particular type of capacitor provides a good mixture of performance and price, with a long rated life, low equivalent series resistance, and excellent reliability. It is mainly used in switching power supplies, digital personal computers, and other general AC to DC power supplies that require low ESR and ripple.

The ULD1V330MDD aluminum electrolytic capacitor has two aluminum plates separated by a dielectric. When the capacitor is powered up, the anode plate is chemically oxidized to create a dielectric layer across its surface, which in turn creates a capacitance. The capacitance created by the ULD1V330MDD is 330µF and it has an operating voltage of 63V. The insulation resistance is in the order of 100µΩ, and the temperature coefficient is ±20%.

The aluminum electrolytic capacitor is able to withstand temperatures of up to -40°C, and it has a shelf life of 2000 hours at +85°C.
