Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are a type of electrolytic capacitor that uses an aluminum foil anode and a liquid or solid electrolyte as cathode to offer large capacitance values in small physical footprint. This current sweeps away any impurities from the surface of the aluminum foil, creating a strong electrical field which forms the capacitor’s capacitance. As the current is passed through the capacitor, it can cause the aluminum foil to degrade, leading to reduced capacitance and increased ESR over time. This process is known as polarity reversal, and must be accounted for when designing with electrolytic capacitors.
