Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors are capacitors that use a chemical process to produce a ceramic-like material with an increased surface area of very thin aluminum foil. This increase of surface area allows for higher capacitance values than traditional aluminum capacitors in very small sizes. One example of a widely used aluminum electrolytic capacitor is the UPA1E391MPD.

The UPA1E391MPD is a miniature, however highly reliable, low impedance aluminum electrolytic capacitor. It is designed with a non solid mounting and snap-in technology which allows for an efficient flexible mounting option. The snap-in feature also greatly simplifies the manual installation and replacement process. The capacitor also features a polarity marking to indicate the correct installation direction.

The UPA1E391MPD is an ideal choice for applications in a variety of different fields. Its high capacitance values, combined with its low impedance, makes it an excellent choice for use in power supplies and also in consumer electronics. The capacitor can also be used in battery-powered electronics where a low quiescent current is desired such as in microcontroller or signal processor-based applications. The main working principle behind aluminum electrolytic capacitors is based on the Faraday law of electrolysis. When DC current is applied between two electrodes in electrolyte solution, oxides are produced on the cathode and the anode. This oxidation of the electrolyte solution releases electrons which create a space charge on the anode and cathode surfaces. This space charge produces an electrical field between the two surfaces which results in a capacitance value.

Along with the DC current, electrolytic capacitors also depend on other factors such as temperature, capacitor age, reversed polarity voltage, and ripple voltage. As the temperature rises, the electrolyte solution breaks down which reduces the effective capacitance and increases the total internal series resistance (ESR). If the capacitor is exposed to reversed polarity voltage then the oxide on the anode may crack and tear, resulting in a much lower capacitance than expected. Also, ripple voltage exceeding the maximum rated voltage can breakdown the electrolyte solution and shorten the capacitor’s overall life.

When properly installed and operated within its specified parameters, the UPA1E391MPD may offer extremely reliable operation for many years to come. Its low impedance, high capacitance values, and automated assembly capabilities make it an ideal choice for a variety of different applications.
