What are Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors?
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, or simply electrolytic capacitors, are capacitors characterized by a dielectric of a thin aluminum oxide film formed on the surface of an anode typically made from aluminum foil. A separator of paper or other insulating film is sandwiched between the anode and the cathode foil made of metal with an oxidized surface layer. The metal needed for the cathode may vary depending on the application and can be types like nickel, tantalum and manganese dioxide. The anode and cathode plates are suspended in a specially formulated electrolyte made of water with additives like acids or alkalis. The UPJ0J681MPD1TA aluminum electrolytic capacitors are radial leaded, non-solid electrolytic capacitors made using high quality aluminum materials. The capacitors are designed for a variety of applications and are offered in five different capacitance values: 100µF, 2.0V (5 x 11); 220µF, 2.0V (6.3 x 13); 470µF, 2.0V (7 x 11); 1,000µF, 2.0V (8 x 12) and 4,700µF, 2.0V (9 x 12).The capacitors offer a high capacitance-to-volume ratio and are designed to be durable and reliable. Thanks to their hermetically sealed, cathode-to-anode construction they are highly resistant to moisture, heat and other environmental conditions. The “J” in the part number stands for the “High Ripple” rated capacitor type. This type is suitable for applications such as power conversion, inverter circuits, consumer electronics, high intensity lighting, etc.The operating principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is based on the capacitive behaviour of a dielectric layer between two metal plates or foils. The dielectric in an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is an oxide layer that forms on the surface of the anode. When a voltage is applied, current starts to flow in order to establish an electric field that causes charges to accumulate on the anode and the cathode.
