Working Principle: An aluminum electrolytic capacitor typically comprises of two aluminum plates separated by an electrolyte. When a voltage is applied across the capacitor, a field is generated in which ions from the electrolyte are attracted to the plates, creating a thin film. This film suppresses electric fields and provides electrical insulation between the two plates. This film, known as the dielectric or the oxide layer, enables the capacitor to store electric charge and electrical energy.
The electrolyte is typically an organic solvent such as alcohol, glycol or water. This electrolyte conducts ions from the aluminium to the oxide layer, which in turn reduces its thickness. This enables the capacitor to act as a conductor and store electric energy. In addition, the presence of an electrolyte makes the impedance of the capacitor low and thus enhances its frequency response.
Electrolytic capacitors also use special foil with porous structure. This type of structure increases surface area of electrode plates and increases short-circuit current. Furthermore, this type of foil also helps in optimizing the capacitance of the capacitor.
