The capacitor consists of two aluminum plates which are separated by an electrolytic solution. The aluminum plates are connected through two separate layers of dielectric insulation. The positive plate of the capacitor is submerged in the electrolyte solution whereas the negative plate is usually coated with a thin layer of non-conducting material.When a voltage is applied between the plates, the dielectric oxide layer acts like a semi-conductor instead of an insulator allowing current to flow. This current flow creates a capacitance in between the two plates which is determined by the type of electrolyte, distance of the plates, and the size of the plates.
