When a voltage is applied to the electrodes of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor, ions of the electrolyte in contact with the aluminum oxide film of the anode diffuse toward the cathode. This diffusion process is accompanied by a large amount of electric current, which is known as "charging current". When the electrode voltage is increased, the electric current flowing through the capacitor gradually decreases. This process is known as "charge balancing".
In addition, the applied voltage reverses the direction of the electric current due to the oxide-electrode capacitance. This process is called "capacitance reversal". Stable operation of the capacitor is maintained by balancing the charge that is generated by the charging current and the discharge that takes place by self-discharge.
