A TVS – Diode, or Transient Voltage Suppressor, is an electronic device used to protect vulnerable electrical circuits from excessive transient voltages. UPT12/TR7 is one such TVS diode, also known as a two-lead voltage clamping device. This device is a specific type of TVS diode, equipped with two leads, and a pair of insulated mounting rods. It is intended for use as a high-voltage cathodic protection for two-way communication devices such as cables, telephone systems, as well as other devices and systems that need surge protection.
The UPT12/TR7 is commonly used in high-voltage applications, typically those that exceed 600 volts. This device is designed for operation in either a fixed or transient voltage environment, making it an invaluable asset in many industrial applications where power surges or voltage spikes can create hazardous conditions. Features include a fast turn-on response, low maximum resistance, high voltage capacity, and excellent surge protection. With its two leads, it can easily be connected to the circuit board or other components for safe use.
The UPT12/TR7 has a fast acting bidirectional clamping action, which allows it to absorb transients of both positive and negative polarities. This feature makes it an ideal choice for high-voltage systems, as it can effectively mitigate the risks of large transient voltage spikes. Moreover, the clamping action is very effective in providing the device’s rated breakdown voltage.
When the UPT12/TR7 is used in a high-voltage application, it is important to consider its working principle. By understanding the TVS – Diode’s underlying working principle, one can properly use and adjust the components for optimal protection. Essentially, the UPT12/TR7 employs a double rectifier diode across a pair of leaded posts, thereby creating a voltage dividing circuit. The two leads act as capacitors, and when a voltage transient exceeds the expected level, the diodes within the circuit begin to conduct current and react accordingly, thus absorbing the excessive voltage. This is accomplished by diverting the current away from the vital components, preventing damage or destruction.
The UPT12/TR7 is also designed to work in tandem with a snubber diode, which is a device typically placed across the leads of a transient voltage suppressor. The reason for this is to ensure that the current is routed away from the protected components and redirected towards the snubber diode. By using a combination of UPT12/TR7 and a snubber diode, one can ensure a high level of surge protection, while also limiting the device’s response time to voltage transient events.
The UPT12/TR7 can be effectively utilized in a wide variety of high-voltage applications, from telecom infrastructure, to remote control systems, as well as a host of other uses. Its two-lead design and fast-acting clamping action make it an ideal choice for protecting vulnerable components from excessive voltage transients. With its high breakdown voltage rating and excellent surge protection, the UPT12/TR7 is an invaluable asset and a must-have for any high-voltage application.
