Working Principle

The application of a DC voltage across the plates of the capacitor causes electric current to flow through the electrolyte, resulting in the formation of an oxide layer on the plates. This oxide layer acts as an insulator, preventing a backflow of electrons. This is the main reason why electrolytic capacitors are used to provide a smooth DC to an AC power supply.
