Introduction to Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are polarized electrolytic capacitors whose anode electrode (+) is made of a pure aluminum foil with an etched surface. The aluminum forms a very thin insulating layer of aluminum oxide by anodization that acts as the dielectric of the capacitor. A wet electrolytic (usually organic) and containing the ionic conductor is used as the cathode (-) electrode. The electrolyte is absorbed by a material with a large amount of surface area, which, together with the alloy foil of the anode, forms the so-called "hybrid" or "hybrid-electrolytic capacitor".

Working principle: When a voltage is applied across its two terminals, the internal electric field of the capacitor causes electrons to travel across the dielectric (bonded aluminum oxide) between the anode and the cathode. This electric field stores energy in the form of static electric charge. When the voltage is removed, the electric charge leaks away as current, gradually discharging the capacitor.
