Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (AECs) are electrical components used in a wide range of electronic applications. Theyfeature a wide capacitance range and low ESR. These are used in large voltage power supplies, signal coupling, storage and filtering.

In basic terms, an CEC consists of an anode (positive terminal) and a cathode (negative terminal). An electrolyte is applied between them, which creates a barrier between the electrodes. The working of an AEC is based on Faraday’s Law of electromagnetic induction. The capacitor’s anode is usually made from aluminum foil, which is then oxidized and coated with a thin, solid insulation layer. When a voltage is applied to the terminals, a layer of dielectric oxide forms on the surface of the aluminum, creating a charge storage surface. This effectively increases the capacitor’s capacitance. The amount of charge stored is proportional to the applied voltage.

As they are non-polarized, AECs are immune to inversion of polarity. This is important for many applications, since voltage sources and circuits may have various polarities. Additionally, they are very reliable and have a long life. Since they are hermetically sealed, they are also resistant to corrosion and oxidation.

AECs are used in power electronics, such as switch mode power supplies (SMPS), automotive electronics, audio circuits, cell phones, and other consumer electronics. They are also widely used in signal filtering and for voltage regulation. They are highly efficient components, providing high power density, low ESR, and increased capacitance. Additionally, they are not as vulnerable to EMC as other types of capacitor.
