Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors, like the UST1C220MDD variety, are constructed of an anode, which is typically aluminum foil, a separator, and a cathode, which in this case is a crimped aluminum coil. Between the anode and the cathode, a liquid electrolyte fills the space and forms a dielectric layer. The electrical energy that is absorbed and released from the capacitor is inversely proportional to the thickness of this dielectric.

These capacitors are used for almost all types of electrical applications, most notably in power supplies, audio, and even as parts of rectifying circuits and voltage multipliers. In power supplies, capacitors are mainly used for filtering and bypassing. With filtering, the capacitors absorb AC current, where it gets stored on the aluminum plates, which act as a low-pass filter. This is because most AC power supplies are usually made up of a combination of DC and AC components. In such scenarios, the capacitors are used to filter out the DC components of the circuit while allowing that of the AC to pass.

In audio, capacitors are used to control the bass frequencies, allowing the treble frequencies to pass more efficiently. Bypassing is used for supplying clean power to various parts of a circuit with reduced cluttering. This ensures a consistent performance in operation and low losses in the form of power dissipation.
