Working Principle

All aluminum electrolytic capacitors consist of two aluminum foils, which are separated by an electrolyte (so called liquid electrolyte or solid electrolyte) and paper or plastic film. The anode and cathode leads connect the aluminum foils to the capacitor’s terminals. An oxide layer is formed on the aluminum anode foil for a capacitor to be assembly. When the capacitor is in circuit, the anode foil and electrolyte undergoes a special electrolytic process which produces positive ions and negative ions in the electrolyte material. The positive ions migrate to the negative lead plate, while the negative ions move to the positive plate, forming an rectifying electric double layer.

As the capacitor charges, the internal electrochemical process increases the oxide layer between the two aluminum plates and the capacitance increases as a result. When current is sent to the capacitor, the increased oxide layer results in an insulating barrier within the capacitor which reduces the number of electrons passing through, thus creating the capacitance. This same process works in the opposite direction to released and discharge energy stored in the capacitor when the current ceases.
