Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

An Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor (also known as an Al-electrolytic) is an electrical component that is used in many industrial and consumer applications. They are often found in power supplies, astronomy equipment, motor controls and industrial automation applications, among many other possible uses. These capacitors have an extremely high capacitance and a relatively low ESR (equivalent series resistance).

The most basic structure of an Al-electrolytic capacitor is a metal can with two metal plates that are separated by a dielectric (insulating material). One of the metal plates is made of aluminum coated with an oxide layer, and the other is a metal or foil surface acting as the conductor. Between these two plates there is a liquid or solid electrolyte that provides the electrical connection between the two electrodes.
