Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, not to be confused with aluminum polymer capacitors, are power-type capacitors with large capacitance values capable of storing significant energy and releasing very high amounts of current. Typically, aluminum electrolytic capacitors use a combination of an anode composed of aluminum foil and a cathode composed of an carbon-olefin copolymer as a dielectric. These types of capacitors are known for their very high energy density and drive current ability, but also for their high internal resistance, poor frequency response and a limited operating temperature range due to evaporative cooling process.

UVR2D2R2MED (Ultra-Wide Range Voltage Reduction, De-Energization, Re-Energization Voltage Control System) is a high performance aluminum electrolytic capacitor technology developed by Sumitomo Chemical. This technology provides a wider range of operating parameters in order to better meet the demand of today’s high power applications. With UVR2D2R2MED, the wide range voltage conversion and the leakage voltage control are carried out together. Furthermore, UVR2D2R2MED is designed with an enhanced internal design which helps to maintain high capacitor life expectancy.

The primary application field of UVR2D2R2MED Capacitors lies in high current applications, such as transducers and motor drives, where the capacitor must withstand widespread and drastic changes in voltage, current, and temperature. It is also suitable for the use in the areas where low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) is required to guarantee reliability, such as frequency converters. In applications such as LED lighting, energy storage solutions and batteries, UVR2D2R2MED can provide excellent charging capacity and discharge/de-energization control.

In order to use UVR2D2R2MED, a power module is required, which acts as a controller to ultimately set the internal working parameters of the capacitor. The power module is connected to a user interface, allowing the user to set the voltage reduction, re-energization and de-energization levels. This interface sends the parameters to the power module, which sets the appropriate levels on the capacitor based on these parameters.

The main principle of UVR2D2R2MED is to reduce the operating voltage and ensure a stable level with a wide range of operating conditions. The voltage reduction is achieved by connecting two capacitors in series. The first capacitor is used to reduce the voltage, while the second provides the filtering of the ripple. The power module then regulates the capacitance of the two capacitors so that the desired voltage reduction can be achieved without compromising ESR.

One advantage of UVR2D2R2MED is its ability to provide high current charging capabilities and a wide range of operating temperatures. However, the device requires careful maintenance, as high current and temperature can damage the aluminum foil, resulting in a shorted capacitor. UVR2D2R2MED technology also provides protection against voltage transients, but it is not able to withstand transient voltages greater than the operating voltage.
