Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, also known as “porous anode type” capacitors, are composed of two aluminum foils with an electrolyte impregnated or deposited between them. The positive plate is the anode foil with an etching or manufacturing pattern that allows the electrolyte to penetrate and wet the surface of the foil. A second aluminum foil of much larger surface area (the cathode foil) is rolled together with the anode in a common package, and electrical leads are connected to both the anode and cathode foils.
