Working Principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors work according to the principle of polarized electrolytic capacitors. The capacitor has out a body of aluminum foil which is an anode, while the cathode is an oxide layer formed on the other surface of the aluminum foil. When a voltage is applied to the oxide layer, electrolyte is drawn into the pores and the positive charges which build up on the surface of the aluminum foil further enhance the oxide layer and increase the capacitance.

The oxide layer acts as an insulator and is able to withstand high temperatures and high-frequency currents. The cathode and anode are then connected to the capacitor leads by a layer of electolyte, allowing current to flow from one electrode to the other. While the capacitor is in operation, the anode oxidizes and electrons are released, while at the same time ions are released from the cathode, forming a charge and allowing current to flow.
