TVS - Varistors, MOVs

Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVSs) are electronic components designed to protect semiconductor devices such as integrated circuits (ICs) and transistors from overvoltage transients. This protection is provided by the TVS device’s ability to reduce or divert a voltage spike or surge. TVSs are standardized into four main categories of devices, depending on the current, frequency and voltage characteristics they are designed to protect from.

The four main categories of TVS devices are Varistors, Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs), Trisilthylamides (TSA) and Zener Diodes. Varistors and MOVs are the most commonly used TVS devices. Varistors are non-linear, voltage-dependent resistors that provide suppression of transient voltage spikes. MOVs are similar in function to varistors but are more efficient at suppressing transient voltage spikes.

V05E35P application field and working principle

The V05E35P is a P-channel Power MOS in a SIP package, designed to protect MOSFETs and other semiconductor devices from high voltage transients. It is mainly used in applications such as automotive electronics, personal electronic devices, solar panels, electric vehicles, etc. The V05E35P features a Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) element, which is used to draw excess current to protect sensitive components.

The MOV element in the V05E35P is composed of a metal oxide dielectric sandwiched between two metal electrodes. An energy storage element is integrated into the MOV element to provide a low impedance path to divert the surge current away from the semiconductor devices. The MOV element works by increasing its resistance when a burst of high voltage is applied, reducing the voltage level across the terminals. The MOV element then discharges the stored energy, allowing the voltage across the device to return to normal.

When the MOV element is triggered, the current through it increases quickly, allowing a portion of the voltage to be diverted away from the sensitive components and back to ground. This prevents damage to these components due to overvoltage. The V05E35P can handle voltage transients up to 6000V and current surges up to 150A, making it an ideal choice for applications involving high-voltage conditions.
