TVS - Varistors, MOVs play vital roles in many electronic circuits, particularly when it comes to protecting circuits from high magnitude voltage transients. This includes protection from electrostatic discharges (ESD), electrical fast transients (EFT), and lightning. One such example of such a TVS device is the V05E40PL2A5.

V05E40PL2A5 is a four-element AC line surge arrestor with ESD protection, exhibiting excellent pulse wave-shaping characteristics. The device is designed for internal use in various electronic systems and can be used to protect against transient overvoltage up to 8000V (for 8/20μs stoke wave) and ESD strikes up to 25A (IEC61000-4-2, level 4).

The V05E40PL2A5 device contains four earthed metal oxide varistors into which a small gap is introduced, with the diameter of 10mm. This gap in the varistor provides the device with a clamping voltage that aids in controlling the overvoltage as well as discharge efficiency. Diode, zener and thyristor technologies are also employed for the protection of the device.

As far as the operation of the device is concerned, V05E40PL2A5 is designed to respond to voltage transients in the AC mains by limiting the magnitude of the voltage. When a transient strikes the V05E40PL2A5 device, the voltage level is limited, thus protecting the downstream circuitry and components from any possible harm. Furthermore, the ESD feature of the device provides short-term protection from electrostatic discharge.
