Transient-Voltage Suppressors (TVSs) are voltage-dependent components designed to protect equipment from voltage transients caused by external sources such as lightning, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and switching surges. Varistors, the most commonly used TVSs, are constructed of sintered semiconductor material sandwiched between two metal plates. Metal-Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are another type of TVS that work by diverting sudden surges of voltage through an oxide layer. Both types of TVSs have a broad range of applications, including the protection of industrial and consumer electronics, power systems, communications networks, and automobiles.
The V201HA40 is a device designed to provide reliable surge protection from extreme voltage spikes in applications ranging from consumer electronics to large-scale industrial systems. It is a type II junction varistor, made from high-precision, high-stability zinc oxide (ZnO) material and encapsulated in a molded UL94V-0 thermoplastic fire protection housing.
The working principle of a varistor relies on a diode-like effect that allows current to pass in one direction while blocking in the other. It consists of a positively-charged PN junction with a reverse bias voltage, and when a high-voltage transient pulse is introduced, the material begins to conduct current. The voltage-dependent response of the ZnO material causes its inherent Zener breakdown voltage to drop down, allowing the current to pass through it without damaging the device.
The V201HA40 is a non-linear, symmetrical flame-retardant varistor with a rated voltage of 200V and a clamp voltage of 1.1kV. It has an operating temperature range of -55°C to 85°C and a rugged, compact form factor which makes it highly suitable for a wide array of applications. The device also provides excellent insulation capabilities and high surge current capabilities, letting it handle high levels of ESD without performance degradation.
In terms of surge current, the V201HA40 can handle up to 90A (8/20µs), making it suitable for use in a variety of power systems and industrial applications. It also offers excellent ESD protection, with its 10kV air/25kV contact ratings allowing it to absorb high levels of ESD energy without failing. The V201HA40 is UL approved and certified to IEC 61000-4-2 6KV, making it suitable for use in a number of sensitive applications.
