During an overvoltage transient, a current or voltage pulse will cause a rapid increase in the voltage breakdown point device, resulting in an instantaneous clamping action on the incident pulse.

The conductive oxide element inside absorbs the excess energy of the pulse, ensuring a low clamping voltage even under very high surge current conditions.
