TVS – Varistors, MOVs – are an important and widely used class of non-linear methods for limiting electrical current transients. The VDRS14T150TME is a type of TVS that uses a radial-lead design to accommodate PCB mounting. It is suitable for an extremely wide range of DC and AC applications.
The main purpose of TVS – Varistors, MOVs – is to avoid fast circuit breaker or fuse displacement under high transient currents, or to limit the voltage rise caused by a time-varying surge on a power supply line. The VDRS14T150TME is a disc-type varistor with a resistance range of 150-300Vdc with a maximium energy dissipation of 15mJ. The device is made from a metal oxide ceramic material using a radial-lead design. The VDRS14T150TME features a 0.06ohm/V - 470k ohm low-resistance characteristic, low capacitance of 0.25pF, and an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. It can withstand an up to 8-kV L-N voltage impulse.
The working principle of the VDRS14T150TME is the same as that of other TVS – Varistors, MOVs. When the voltage across it is lower than its breakover breakdown voltage, the device basically behaves like a resistor with a low DC resistance. When the applied voltage exceeds its breakdown voltage, the device conducts current since its resistance reduces drastically. It is also referred to as the “avalanche effect”. As the voltage continues to rise, the current slowly increases, thus limiting the voltage rise and reducing the overshoot. Once the voltage exceeds the clamping voltage, the device’s current reduces and eventually returns to its original low-resistance state.
The VDRS14T150TME has a wide range of applications. It is used for ESD suppression, electrical overstress protection, and ground fault protection in various industries, such as consumer, telecom, automotive, and industrial. It is also suitable for power supply line, telecommunications line, and signal line surge protection.
